Breadth character development:

What makes a demon?
Demons are fallen humans, consumed by dark magic. Over time they became their own race with many different breeds, but are still supplemented by humans who fall and become demons themselves.

I want these demons to be recognizable as demons, but not your standard Christian-type demons. They are strange, twisted, and different, but do hold resemblances to our present mythology.

Standard demon features that are present in all the breeds:

horns
hooves/talons?
tail &/or wings
pointed ears
often red or animalized eyes
strong human base in their body type
skin tones range through normal human skin tones plus varying shades of red. Scarlet skin & colors only belong to the most lethal of demons.
ability to use a specialized magic
ability to use language

Demon types/breeds

transformation
possession
succubus/incubus
stealth
satyr/faun
imp
persuasion/deception
vampiric

What sets the beasts apart from demons?

strong animal base in body type
only a select few beasts can use magic, like dragons
only a select few beasts can use spoken language, like trolls. Dragons have a complex written language and body language but can't speak.
most beasts aren't terribly intelligent if they are intelligent at all. Trolls are not very bright even if they can speak.
many beasts are close to being demons, they're considered borderline like the trolls, but the key distinguishing factor is the lack of magic.

Demon Sketches:

Kordaak is Chookery's main enemy in the Wastes. Kordaak is a transformation demon, but he's half human so his transformation ability is limited. He's come up with a preferred form that he transforms into, which is a large orangoutang-lizard-esque thing.

The above drawing was my original version, drawn about 3-4 years ago before I really knew anything about anatomy.

Another rough recent 1st pass. I need to draw more angles and details.

The demon King, Baltharazz also known by his human name Bathan. He is Chookery's nephew and became a demon about twenty years after Chookery was banished. He's rumored to be the only demon to have kept his human heart. He has scarlet colors because he is a vampiric-type demon, he can drain the life from every creature within a 30-foot radius of himself. If he wants to drain life from an individual he has to touch them. When he touches and drains a demon he can obtain their powers, so he is now the ultimate demon and none can defeat him. He prefers staying as human as possible, but he has a perfected demon form for when he needs to fight or appear as the demon King.
